Respiratory Fit Testing

  • To ensure that all areas of the hospital requiring the use of respirators have been evaluated in the past year.
  • Respirator selection based on the type and nature of the hazardous operation or process.
  • Annual fit testing performed on each employee wearing a respirator.

It is the employer’s obligation to provide safe and healthful working conditions for employees. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is preeminently designed to protect workers and has set permissible exposure limits (PEL’s) for many airborne toxic materials. If an employee’s exposure to these engineering controls and/or administrative controls be instituted to reduce employee exposure to these materials. If these controls do not prove feasible, or while they are being instituted, the employer is required to provide appropriate respiratory protection for the employee.

ARTEC Environmental Monitoring will provide, if not provided by the hospital, an evaluation of hospital areas that are in need of respiratory protection. Based on the evaluation of hospital areas, respirators will be selected according to the type and nature of the hazardous operation or process they will be utilized in. Annual fit testing will be performed on all employees wearing a respirator. A written respiratory protection program will be provided and updated as needed in compliance with the OSHA Standard – 29 CFR 1910.134.
